Who are the Conversation Starters and why is improv important to leadership?
Lori Crever is a corporate innovator, Charlie runs an innovation process consulting firm in town, and John is an actor, director and creativity guru. Together they’ll lead us through a provocative, highly participative morning of improvisational leadership and how it might just change your life.
So why improvisation? and why is it effective? "Improv" demands that a leader be grounded and present, and in doing so express intention and authenticity. Improv gives us the tools for unleashing our spontaneity and vitality. Lori puts it this way, “Improv is a practice that has you tap into the infinite. What do you do when you run out of ideas? Remember that your imagination is infinite. It takes courage to act this way.”
John on the importance of inviting people to play, “The invitation is just as crucial as the acceptance of the invitation.” When invited, people have a greater potential for overcoming fear, being able to take a risk, getting to the next great moment.”
Improvisational leadership encompasses self-responsibility. When we become self-responsible in ANY scene, we no longer are victims to change, and can move into co-creation of our life in any scene that we're put into.
Charlie on improv and leadership: “The value of improv as a leader/guide is knowing my role and when to get out of the way to allow a team improvise on their own; its all about trust. Think of a project as a scene in a play. There are times when you enter a scene to bring something in and heighten what is there. Other times, that same presence would have diverted the energy and the scene would have died.”
What we will learn by exploring improvisation in leadership?
• To examine the context of how and when we are truly leading, versus when we are imposing our presence on the process.
• To understand both the philosophical and practical approaches to improvisation.
• To find how improv fits in your leadership style and model, your organization, and your life as soon as you leave the room.
• To gain confidence in our roles as improvisational leaders, and commit to letting improvisation happen.
Join Charlie, Lori, John, and the TLG community for a fun-filled, interactive morning of improvisational leadership in action!
