The True Potential of Leadership:
Dynamic Creativity and Collaboration

with Ann Schrader (view bio),
Chief Operating Officer, HealthEast Care System

2010 Health Care Hero in Administrative Excellence by Twin Cities Business magazine and Medica
2010 Jean Harris Award winner by Women's Healthcare Leadership Trust

How do you know if you're leading well? Not long ago, Patricia asked Ann this question. Ann responded by asking the people who work with her to help her answer. What unfolded was the identification of a unique style of leadership that is so highly valued, it needs to be defined as a legacy piece for HealthEast.

The river style of leadership exemplifies how Ann leads: life and leadership are like going down a river. There are many curves, rarely a straight line. You can pull over and stop; you can explore other side and you can decide to co-create. It’s not linear and it can demand creativity to navigate. “Your creativity is your true leadership. It can drive people crazy because it seems unstable. But you listen, and people know it, so they can trust their relationship with you, trust that there is a process and flow.”

Ann’s story is one of consistent feminine leadership, maintaining a style that is her own, in the midst of the constant, soft, unintended pressure to become like everyone else.

Early on, Ann was identified by mentors for leadership potential. As Director of Nursing for Midway Hospital, her creativity, leadership, and followership were apparent. Tapped to be CEO of Midway Hospital, she proved she could master a management style of rewarding for business outcomes, making money, and making hard decisions as well as maintain her inclusive people skills.

What it takes to be on the “C” track: “You have to want to be at the decision-making table. You have to want to be responsible for identifying and implementing. My desire to be a decision-maker stemmed from wanting to be responsible for a new kind of patient-care. Believe in yourself and, when the door opens, you walk through it and you don’t look back.”

Ann made a deliberate decision to maintain the feminine style, the river style. “What does it mean to be a woman in the workplace? It’s all personal. It’s who you are and how you bring it. By nature, I’m an inclusive person.”

Colleagues testify to Ann’s effective leadership style: “You’ve modeled how to be a senior leader over many years - how to hold your own, how to hang on to value. When you’re in the room, every voice is heard. Things are on the table. Peripheral water cooler conversations don’t usually happen after your meetings.”

When asked, “How have you chosen time after time to be who you are, to not forget who you are?” Ann replies, “You remember who you represent (a predominantly female organization).” To be in true relationship, the essential combination of the ability to hold people accountable, while maintaining the relationship, is crucial.
