November 19, 2009: The Power of Collective Wisdom with Alan Briskin, Consultant; author of The Stirring of Soul in the Workplace, co-author of Daily Miracles, and his new book The Power of Collective WisdomIf we are to disentangle the extraordinary challenges that we face today, in organizations, communities and nations, we must transcend our divisions and develop solutions together. But what enables us to collectively make wise decisions and sound judgments instead of splintering apart? When human beings gather together a depth of awareness and insight, a transcendent knowing, becomes available. We have the potential to tap into an extraordinary co-creative power that exists in every group. How can we do this more reliably? Collective wisdom is elusive and unpredictable – it can’t be willed into being. We can, however, create the conditions for collective wisdom to be cultivated. We invite you to join us to discuss Alan’s new book, The Power of Collective Wisdom: And the Trap of Collective Folly. He and his co-authors have created a foundational book for an emerging field of study and practice relevant to everyone seeking more effective and satisfying ways of working with others. “This book takes knowledge about groups and elevates to a field and a movement. The authors….have the ability to integrate a breadth of thinking into a new whole.” Peter Block

September 22, 2009: Healing the Rift: Bridging the Gap Between Science & Spirituality with Leo Kim, PhD, Managing Director, President and CEO, POSCO BioVentures“Science is not only compatible with spirituality; it is a profound source of spirituality.” Science attempts to explain the world without a creator, spirit or design, constantly seeking new information with which to test its theories. Spirituality holds that the most important aspects of the world are beyond human comprehension. It labels this realm "spirit," "soul," and "God." Who is right? Are humans simply a cluster of cells that eventually dies? Is there a greater plan? In his new book, Leo Kim chronicles his metaphysical and scientific journey, and reveals how recent scientific breakthroughs led him to the belief that the world is a blending of mind and spirit. |

July 14, 2009: We are beings of cosmic connection who are learning to live in a living universe… with Duane Elgin, Author, Social Scientist, SpeakerDuane’s new book, The Living Universe, explores a new paradigm that is vital for building a sustainable future; namely, a shift from regarding the universe as fragmented and dead to seeing it as unified and alive. Traditionally, science has regarded the universe as made up of inert matter and empty space. Duane Elgin brings together extraordinary evidence from cosmology, biology and physics to show that the universe is not dead but rather uniquely alive, an insight which, he shows, is in harmony with all of the world’s major spiritual traditions. He explores how this view radically transforms our concept of ourselves, our place in the cosmos, and the evolutionary trajectory of the human family. The non-living view of the universe has led to rampant materialism and global environmental degradation. To transform our planetary crises we need to move past a paradigm of separation and exploitation and learn to live sustainably on the Earth, in harmony with one another, and in communion with the living universe. |

June 23, 2009 - Leaders Make the Future: 10 New Leadership Skills for an Uncertain World with Bob Johansen, author, former CEO, Distinguished Fellow, Institute for the Future
Yesterday's experience cannot serve tomorrow's challenges. Bob will
speak to the ten skills that will help leaders see connections in
larger systems, embrace shared assets and opportunities, and cut
through the chaos to build a better future.According to Bob, 2009 is a “Springboard Year.” It is always easier to do ten-year forecasting than one-year forecasting, but it is especially true now. Now is exactly the time when ten-year forecasting can be most valuable. 2009 is authentically frightening, but it also has great potential to be a springboard year. Volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity are likely to get worse in 2009. Many people are already choking on uncertainty most of the time. Some leaders are still expecting a return to predictability. If we stew ourselves in 2009, we’ll never get to 2019. Those organizations that do nothing but hunker down in this crisis will be way behind when things start getting better. Leaders can make the future, but they won’t make it all at once and they can’t make it alone. 2009 can be a springboard year, if leaders use foresight to spark their own insight and inform their own action. Given the future forces of the next decade, where do you stack up in terms of your current leadership skills? Are you ready to lead in a future that will be volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous? How could you improve your own readiness? Take this self-assessment to rate your own readiness for the future—given the forces of the next decade—as well as draw some conclusions about leadership in the years to come: http://bkauthorapps.com/lmtf1/ (Bob is the conversation starter at the July 10 Thought Leader Gathering in the Bay Area, CA) |
| May 12, 2009: Agenda for a New Economy: From Phantom Wealth to Real Wealth with David Korten, author, co-founder , the Positive Futures Network, founding board member, Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE)Our hope lies not with Wall Street, but with Main Street, which creates real wealth from real resources to meet real needs. Today’s economic crisis is the worst since the Great Depression. However, as David Korten shows, the steps being taken to address it – including pouring trillions of dollars into bailouts for the Wall Street institutions that created the mess – do nothing to deal with the reality of a failed economic system. And the financial collapse now in the public spotlight is only the tip of the iceberg. The system’s social and environmental failures may ultimately be even more destructive. David identifies the deeper sources of the failure: Wall Street institutions that have perfected the art of creating phantom “wealth” without producing anything of real value. Its major players engage in speculative trading, buy into asset bubbles, create debt pyramids, and engage in predatory lending practices. Their seeming success created an economic mirage that led us to believe the economy was expanding exponentially, even as our economic, social, and natural capital eroded and most people struggled ever harder to make ends meet. David outlines an agenda to liberate the latent entrepreneurial energies of Main Street from Wall Street’s deadly grip and bring into being a new economy—locally based, community-oriented, and devoted to creating a better life for all, not simply increasing profits. It will require courageous and imaginative changes to how we measure economic success, organize our financial system, even the very way we create money. David’s intention is not to offer final answers, but rather to provoke discussion of options. It’s time to turn away from the Wall Street system of phantom wealth and return to an economy firmly rooted in the long-term health of people and the planet. Website: www.davidkorten.org |
