BIOGRAPHY
Nina Utne, Chair and CEO of Utne magazine, is a writer, political activist, mother and community-builder. A vegetarian at three (a meat-eater at 48),and a yoga practitioner from age 15. She is passionate about Utne and its mission. Utne is an independent media company. We believe that personal evolution is the key to social change. Our mission is to seek out and illuminate the essential information, people and trends that inspire our audience to take action to make the world kinder and greener.

Founded in 1984, UTNE MAGAZINE reprints the best articles from over 2,000 alternative media sources bringing you the latest ideas and trends emerging in our culture... Provocative writing from diverse perspectives... Insightful analysis of art and media... Down-to-earth news and resources you can use... In-depth coverage of compelling people and issues that affect your life... The best of the alternative media.

Thanks to her leadership, the magazine continues to defy the odds. In an age of media consolidation, Utne proudly remains one of the few truly independent magazines in the country.

In addition to being intimately involved in every aspect of Utne magazine since its founding in 1984, Nina is frequently asked to speak on a wide range of topics. These include “motherhood as a training-ground for business,” “the power of media to transform culture,” “spirituality and business,” “the voice of independent media,” and more. Nina is a founder of the Headwaters Fund and City of Lakes Waldorf School. She is also a founding member of both UnReasonable Women for the Earth and Code Pink.

Nina holds a BA in English and American Literature from Harvard University and a masters degree in Human Development from St. Mary’s University. She has been married to Utne founder Eric Utne for 25 years and is the mother of three sons and stepmother to one son.
